MADISON, N.J. – After trailing 1-0 78 minutes into the match, Penn FC notched three goals in the final 11 minutes to defeat FC Motown in the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Wednesday night.
Miguel Jaime provided the spark for the late offensive fireworks. In the 79th minute, Richard Menjivar blasted a shot that was deflected and the clearance only made it as far as Jaime waiting 25 yards from goal. The rookie stroked a smooth left-footed, one-bounce volley that found the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.
Just moments after the restart, Penn FC was deep into FC Motown territory again and this time Prince Baffoe launched a rocket from the edge of the 18-yard box that left keeper Ryan Baird with little chance at the save. The shot blistered the net’s top left corner and planted Rush Soccer’s First Team squarely in front.
Pedro Galvao provided stoppage-time insurance for the Blue and White. The wingback put the finishing touches on the win with a lovely piece of skill from the left wing. After cutting inside his defender, Galvao powered a shot into the top shelf to give Penn FC a 3-1 lead and guarantee the victory.
After a scoreless first half, FC Motown drew first blood early in the second half. Christopher Katona picked up an interception near midfield and immediately started a break. He slid a ball over to Dilly Duka on his left and Duka slotted a left-footed shot from the left side of the goal into the side netting on the far post. After 53 minutes of play, Duka had his third goal in the Open Cup, and Penn FC was forced to make offensive-minded substitutions.
FC Motown had two chances on goal in the first half. Sean Lewis was called into service in the 28th minute. Max Garcia unloaded a screamer outside the box that required Lewis to dive full-extended to his left and make the fingertip save. In the closing moments of the half, activity in the box nearly yielded an opportunity for FC Motown before Lewis nabbed the ball to keep the match scoreless at the half.
Penn FC will enjoy a week off before it travels to Richmond, Va., for a matchup against USL-rival Richmond Kickers in the Open Cup’s third round on Wednesday, May 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Stadium. US Soccer’s official website will stream the match live.
